چکیده

horacic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) has become aneurysms were included and the extent of aortic coverage or Testablished as a less invasive option for the management of descending thoracic aortic diseases compared with conventional open surgical repair. TEVAR has reduced morbidity and mortality compared with open surgical repair, but still it is associated with a significant risk of spinal cord ischemia (SCI), which can lead to permanent paraplegia. The 2 major recognized medical interventions to prevent and treat spinal cord ischemia in patients undergoing TEVAR are arterial pressure augmentation and lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage. Despite limited evidence from randomized controlled trials, the published clinical experience supports the effectiveness of CSF drainage as an adjunct for the treatment of patients with SCI and in prevention of permanent paraplegia as a consequence of TEVAR. Although there is little controversy regarding the use of lumbar CSF drainage for the treatment of SCI, considerable controversy exists as to whether preoperative insertion of a lumbar CSF drain is warranted as a prophylactic measure in patients undergoing TEVAR. Based on the existing clinical experience published in the medical literature, an argument can be made to support the routine use of prophylactic CSF drainage among patients undergoing TEVAR who are deemed preoperatively to be at high risk for SCI. The reported incidence of SCI after TEVAR ranges between 0% and 10.3%, with the average incidence being between 3% and 5%. Published clinical series suggested that the risk of SCI associated with TEVAR was less than that associated with open surgical repair; however, there was significant anatomic heterogeneity in these series. Indeed, most TEVAR procedures were performed for aortic pathology limited to the descending thoracic aorta. When patients with thoracoabdominal aortic

Changes in some pro-and anti-inflammatory cytokines produced by bovine peripheral blood mononuclear cells following foot and mouth disease vaccination

Interleukin (IL)-17 is exclusively produced by CD4 helper T-cells upon activation. It most often acts as a pro-inflammatory cytokine, which stimulates the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF). In this study, we studied the in-vitro IL-17 response to specific antigens and a variety of mitogens and compared the IL-1...

Effect of Dietary Supplementation of Procyanidin on Growth Performance and Immune Response in Pigs

This study was performed to determine the effect of dietary supplementation of procyanidin on growth performance, blood characteristics, and immune function in growing pigs. In experiment 1 (Exp. 1), thirty-two crossbred pigs with an initial BW of 19.2±0.3 kg were allocated into 4 treatments for an 8-wk experiment: i) CON (basal diet), ii) MOS 0.1 (basal diet+0.1% mannanoligosaccharide), iii) P...

Relaunching the Pro–Con section at Critical Care

At a recent Editorial Board meeting of Critical Care that was held in conjunction with the International Symposium of Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine in Brussels, there was a fairly lively discussion about the Pro–Con section of the journal. Despite data demonstrating that the diverse and provocative Pro–Con debates published over the years have been popular, there was a sense they could ...

A New Method for Re-Analyzing Evaluation Bias: Piecewise Growth Curve Modeling Reveals an Asymmetry in the Evaluation of Pro and Con Arguments

In four studies we tested a new methodological approach to the investigation of evaluation bias. The usage of piecewise growth curve modeling allowed for investigation into the impact of people's attitudes on their persuasiveness ratings of pro- and con-arguments, measured over the whole range of the arguments' polarity from an extreme con to an extreme pro position. Moreover, this method provi...

Dietary administration of a commercial mixed-species probiotic improves growth performance and modulates the intestinal immunity of tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus.

The growth performance, immunological status, intestinal morphology and microbiology of tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, were investigated after dietary administration of the commercial probiotic AquaStar(®) Growout. Tilapia (29.02 ± 0.33 g) were split into five treatments; control (CON), 1.5 g kg(-1) probiotic (PRO-1.5), 3 g kg(-1) probiotic (PRO-3), pulsed probiotic feeding (PRO-PULSE) or an i...

Ligand-binding domain subregions contributing to bimodal agonism in cyclic nucleotide–gated channels

Cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) channels bind cGMP or cAMP in a cytoplasmic ligand-binding domain (BD), and this binding typically increases channel open probability (P(o)) without inducing desensitization. However, the catfish CNGA2 (fCNGA2) subtype exhibits bimodal agonism, whereby steady-state P(o) increases with initial cGMP-binding events ("pro" action) up to a maximum of 0.4, but decreases ...
